Illegal as Art

«Arguments about graffiti as art usually degenerate into protracted lectures on illegality. If something is illegal, then it cannot be art. So the Michelangelo question inevitably comes up. If Michelangelo were to have painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel on your garage without your permission, would it be art? Illegality and art are separate issues. Ultimately, such debates give people an excuse not to understand what graffiti is and why or how people are using it.»
